That's what swingin' is: A master class with Wynton Marsalis
Producer/ Director: Robert Albers, Co-Producer/ Editor: Amol Pavangadkar
Video DVD/ Duration-50:00/ In stereo/NTSC
US $11.99

Videotaped live at Michigan State University in April 2003, Jazz Great Wynton Marsalis guides students through Duke Ellington’s “Cottontail” and “The Shepherd”. Using humor, his extensive knowledge of jazz history and performance, and an unerring sense of what will bring jazz music alive, Marsalis engages a large audience of musicians and music lovers in a fast moving mix of music, teaching, and insight. The audience is treated to an audible transformation of the MSU Jazz Band I, as Marsalis cajoles and coaches greater expressivity and power from the surprisingly able young musicians.

In this interactive DVD, Marsalis touches on multiple jazz themes, ranging from phrasing to call and response to dealing with nerves to the “groove” in swinging. Viewers can watch the entire 50-minute class or find topics of particular interest in the chapter index. Special Features include excerpts from a lively post-class question and answer session with Wynton Marsalis.
